Neurological rehabilitation

Why us?
The physiotherapists at South Physio Clinic are specialized in neurological rehabilitation. Having attended post-graduate studies in England on advanced physiotherapy in neurological patients, they are able to undertake the holistic care of a patient in collaboration with the family, if necessary, and their existing medical team.

What to expect?
When a patient enters our premises, they meet the South Physio Clinic team, and then we proceed with a detailed assessment of their physical condition. This point in the treatment of the neurological patient is one of the most important, because we clearly set a starting point of abilities (baseline measures) to which we can refer in the future to monitor the patient's progress and we can also proceed with a clear goal setting that is integral part of our approach. We record a wealth of information about the patient, some of which are: existing range of motion (active and passive), existing hypertonia (modified Oxford scale), muscle strength (Oxford scale), pathological reflexes, sensory problems, self-care ability and transport ability, walking, and risk of falls.

What is your approach?
Having worked for several years in England, our approach is influenced by the Bobath principles. This means that from us you will expect 1-1 hands-on treatment and facilitation of your movement. In case there are sensory issues, we will spend treatment time related to sensory integration and desensitization. If there is significant muscle weakness, it is possible to use electrical stimulation devices either at home with the instructions of the therapist, or in the clinic in the form of functional electrical stimulation (FES) such as e.g. while walking or using the upper extremity in various grips.

One of the most important parts of rehabilitation is therapeutic strengthening which is properly structured by specialized therapists to intercept dysfunctional movement patterns and encourage more functional patterns. To achieve this we have installed a complete gym that is friendly to people with disabilities, which includes hoist equipment for transporting patients, treadmill and parallel bars with suspension equipment to prevent falls, recumbent bike, and a wheelchair-friendly Skierg.

Therapeutic empowerment and the aforementioned therapeutic tools allow us to retrain patients in functional and safe transfers, which in turn empowers them for better self-care/self-care. It is important to note that in our space there is a toilet and a kitchen fully accessible to people with mobility problems, and these spaces can be used in a therapeutic context if needed, e.g. transfer from wheelchair to W.C, use of kitchen equipment as part of limb rehabilitation. Finally, we work closely with our patients' caregivers and offer manual handling training to keep our patients safe whether they are with us, in their own space or in the community.

Which patients do you see?
We accept adult and pediatric patients with mobility issues. For our pediatric patients, we have a separate treatment area, and we encourage parents to be in the area and watch or participate in physical therapy as needed.

Some of the neurological conditions we often see are the following:

  • Parkinson's
  • Stroke
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Brain damage
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Spinal injury
  • Nerve paralysis such as e.g. facial nerve
  • Functional neurological disorder (FND)
  • Vestibular system/balance disorders
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Guillain-Barré syndrome
  • Patients with advanced dementia
  • Gerontological patients
